Who We Are

Our Founders

MABECS was set up in 1985, to assist students in Malaysia to find suitable places, at universities in the United Kingdom.

Since that time, students we have counselled, have been able to take up degree studies at every university in Britain, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Working with education institutions in Malaysia, MABECS has counselled many thousands of students and helped them to find the most suitable courses and universities for their further studies.

Our consultants have all been educated in the United Kingdom and so are able to give first hand information on study and life in the UK.

Our strongly student-centered approach to counselling, means that we give students the fullest possible information on all available options, to help them make sensible decisions.

Advice, information and assistance with applications, are given free of charge and our consultants are always ready to sort out any problems that may arise, and to brief you on preparations for travel to the UK.

Our friendly multi-racial, open-access office, can be easily reached by bus or LRT, and no appointment is necessary to drop in and browse through the reference library, view university CDs, talk to a consultant, or complete and send an application.

If you can't visit us, then fill in our enquiry form, or send us an email, fax, letter or telephone us.

First, have a look at some of the information on this website. We hope you find that the information here provides you with some of the answers to the many questions you may have on furthering your studies in the UK.

Our Founders

MABECS was founded by Mr David Guard and his wife Carmen, in 1985.

After schooling in Oxford and taking a degree in Cambridge, Mr Guard took a job as an engineer in Canada before going to Ethiopia, where he became a science teacher.

Returning to the UK he became Head of Physics in a residential school, and subsequently a housemaster there, before undertaking a postgraduate course in Educational Administration & Organisation at the University of Oxford.

Mr Guard first came to Malaysia in 1974, as an Adviser on Residential Schools at the Ministry of Education and later, was the Project Director, at the Centre for British Teachers in Malaysia.

He then set up his own company, to look after the interests of students in Malaysia wishing to study in UK.

His unique knowledge of both the Malaysian and British systems education, and his conviction that students should be given full information on degree possibilities before embarking on their studies led him to set up the Malaysian British Educational Co-operation Services (MABECS) in 1985.

In this he was much assisted by the late Tan Sri Haji Murad bin Mohd. Noor, a former Director General of Education.

Together with their dedicated team of consultants and administrators they have established MABECS as the most professional and experienced UK counselling service in Malaysia, giving students access to the whole range of degree programmes in Britain.
