A Journey of Growth and Happiness

University of Leeds

Hi everyone, I’m Wei Xi!

I’m currently a second year Computer Science student at the University of Leeds. Before starting my degree, I completed the International Foundation Year (IFY) here as well.

I first came across the University of Leeds online while researching top universities in the UK. Being a prestigious Russell Group university which constantly ranked among the top 100 universities, the University of Leeds stood out for its academic standards and strong reputation. What truly drew me, however, was the welcoming and vibrant atmosphere of both the university and the city.

Leeds is a lively student city, where you can meet students from all around the world. The campus is conveniently located near to the city centre, making it easy to hang out with friends after classes. There’s a bunch of restaurants offering Thai, Indian, Chinese and many other types of cuisines, which is something that I really enjoy! I also love the events organised in Leeds throughout the year, such as the Christmas Market, which brings a festive and warm feeling of winter in Leeds.

Moreover, the University of Leeds provides great learning facilities and student support. For instance, the Laidlaw Library provides both group and self-study space which becomes my go-to place when I am doing my revision. The Roger Stevens building dedicated to lecture classes is equipped with various sizes of lecture theatres perfect forteaching. The university also provides various opportunities for volunteering and part-time jobs, which has helped me to develop both personally and professionally.

My IFY experience provided a really good foundation for my undergraduate study. The modules taught are all highly relevant to my degree, so I am more confident when I entered first year. As a Computer Science undergraduate student, I am able to use the high-performance computers in the Sir William Henry Bragg building, which is one of the most modern facilities on campus. What I truly appreciate most is how much the university cares about our future career. The dedicated Careers Centre organises a range of drop-in sessions, career fairs and one-to-one guidance which helps students in securing summer internships or placement opportunities.

Overall, my journey at the University of Leeds has been filled with growth, opportunities and happiness, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision to study here!
