I chose to study at the University of Sheffield because it is one of the leading engineering institutions in the UK, well known for its strong academic reputation and emphasis on practical, hands-on learning. As someone who learns best by doing, Sheffield’s approach really appealed to me. The university provides exceptional facilities for engineering students, especially The Diamond, which houses state-of-the-art laboratories, specialist equipment, and modern workspaces designed specifically for engineering education.
Being able to use industry-standard software such as LTSpice, MATLAB, and CST Studio, as well as designing and testing circuits on breadboards, has allowed me to develop a deep and practical understanding of what I learn in class. Studying engineering here has been genuinely enjoyable because I can apply theory directly to real projects and strengthen my skills through experience.

Sheffield is also a wonderful place for international students. The university is known for being inclusive and welcoming, with a strong focus on creating a supportive environment for students from all backgrounds. There are numerous student societies that help international students feel at home, no matter where they come from.
As a Malaysian student, I’ve especially appreciated the Sheffield Malaysian Students Association (SMSA). SMSA organises various cultural, social, and festive events throughout the year, giving Malaysian students a sense of belonging even though we are far away from home. Having this community has made my transition to studying abroad much easier and has helped me stay connected to my culture.

My advice to Malaysian students considering Sheffield is to embrace the journey and make the most of your time here. Work hard, stay curious, and don’t hesitate to try new things. Although Sheffield may not be as widely known as cities like Manchester, it has so much to offer.
The city is full of beautiful green spaces, peaceful parks, and excellent hiking spots,
especially with the Peak District so close by. As a nature lover, I’ve really enjoyed exploring the area. Sheffield is also a very safe and student-friendly city, which makes it a comfortable place to live and study. Overall, if you are looking for a supportive environment, high-quality education, and a balanced lifestyle, Sheffield is an excellent choice.
